Purpose: To investigate the relation of serum cholesterol with the risk of age related macular degeneration (AMD) in Koreans.
Methods: Serum levels of total cholesterol, triglyceride, low (LDL) and high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol as well as Apo A-I and Apo B cholesterol were determined in 126 patients with AMD and in 106 controls.
Results: The serum total cholesterol, triglyceride and LDL cholesterol were not associated with the risk of AMD. However, HDL cholesterol was higher in AMD patients compared with non-AMD controls.
Conclusions: The results suggest that elevated HDL might be associated with an increased risk of AMD. Lipid dismetabolism may affect on AMD pathogenesis, but differently compared to cardiovascular diseases.
